Congress Just Classified PIZZA As A Vegetable (And I’m Boiling Mad)

By Coach Josh Under Nutrition Tips

I’m a pretty even-tempered guy most of the time…

… but as a nutritionist, what I saw on the news today really makes my blood boil
… and I’m not going to sit here and be quiet about it a second longer…

Congress just declared that PIZZA is a vegetable!

That’s right, those sneaky American lawmakers have ruled that anything containing a measly two tablespoons of (processed) tomato paste can be labeled as a vegetable in our public schools… so now, our kids can stuff themselves with MORE pizza instead of say… broccoli or a salad or peas, etc…

Hip-hip hooray! [Sarcasm]

What’s next, is a hot fudge sundae going to be counted as a fruit because it has a cherry on top?

What’s more… if you put two tablespoons of tomato paste (ketchup) on a huge cheeseburger… is that now a vegetable, too?

It’s no wonder our country is becoming so sick and tired…

Now I bet you’re wondering how in the world congress came to this bone-headed decision…

If you guessed GREED then you hit the nail on the head…

Here’s the deal:

The Department of Agriculture was seeking to restrict pizza, chips and starchy vegetables from the menu for school children in a bid to battle childhood obesity. (Our kids are so unhealthy and overweight these days that it’s a tragedy.)

Well, it turns out politicians had been lobbied heavily by the frozen food industry who didn’t want to see a major revenue stream cut off… given how often pizza is found on the menus of school cafeterias in the US.

But school meals subsidized by the government are mandated to include a certain amount of vegetables and the Department of Agriculture’s plan would have pushed pizza-makers at least partly out of the school lunch business opting for REAL vegetables.

So in a nut shell, the frozen food lobbyists bought off our congress and now pizza is considered a veggie in our schools.

And this is just the tip of the ice berg… this is the same way that toxic ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, trans fats and MSG get laced into our foods these days…

I’m sick of lobbyists “legally bribing” elected officials to make decisions that make the big fat cats rich and put our health in jeopardy.

I thought elected officials were supposed to be “lobbying” for our health and safety… I think it’s high time to write a letter to my congressman…

In the mean time… I’m going to go eat some real vegetables…

I hope you’ll forgive my rant… but someone had to stand up and say something about this…

Sincerely,
joshCoach Josh

If people want to be stupid and believe what the government says, (and who in their right mind would do such a thing) I guess their health is their problem and they deserve all the HBP, High cholestral and diebetes they get. At the end of the day, we are all responsible for our own health and there is enough truth to be found out there to make that possible.

I have children in the school system and they prefer to buy lunch, probably because it’s cooler than bringing your lunch. I have always had a difficult time with school lunches, they are really disgusting. You’re talking starchy carbs upon more starchy carbs! Sometimes there isn’t even protein included in the meals and barely any veggies that really matter! A lot of time it’s some form of potato or another. I make my kids bring their lunch and allow them to buy certain days so that I can make sure that they are eating sensibly. My children are good eaters, but when they continue to get filled on disgusting foods like that they lose sight of what is nutritional and begin to carry on that need of gross eating at home. I know this has to do with all the addictive additives and it scares me!

    Sigh…
Regarding your comment, “I think it’s high time to write a letter to my congressman…”, I am reminded of a poem from my youth:

    “Should I Write My Congressman?”
Each congressman has two ends: a sitting and a thinking end.
And since his whole career depends upon his SEAT… why bother, friend?

Good luck, anyways… but (especially after seeing “SuperSize Me!”), if anyone STILL thinks pickles and ketchup can be classified as “vegetables” (remember, THAT is going back to the days of Reaganomics!), they are just being trickled on…
    :-/

  4. Such a great veriaty of menu items! That is a good point about the seasonality of food availability – there comes a point where the reserves are gone and the fresh is not harvestable (or even planted) yet. Being more flexible, keeping preserved options, and adjusting the menu a bit are all ways to cope successfully with it. My husband still rebels abit though because when he wants a tomato – he “wants” a tomato – even if it is in February and they are shipped from who knows where! I usually talk him out of it – but it’s a hard culture of “on demand” food supply to break.
